S Bound on the Fwy

Over the weekend we took a short jaunt down the 405 from the South Bay to Seal Beach. Unfortunately due to technical issues most of the pictures that were taken on the N bound portion of the trip didn't survive. Still there were a few decent shots southbound.

First is a basic shot of the 405 S taken a bit N of the Crenshaw exit. This is a nice spot where you still have trees lining the lanes, rather than a wall.

Although presumably there is a wall behind the trees.

This second shot is a nice shot of the Normandie Ave exit, as you approch the interchange with the 110.

Clearly the 110 is one of the worst freeways in Southern California (besides the 10 of course). Fortunately I don't need to go downtown much and largely avoid the 110.

Our third shot for the trip is a nice shot of something you don't really see much on the 405 -- someone breaking the speed limit.

Note here (for legal purposes) that the angle only makes it appear as if I'm exceeding 65 mph.

Also keep in mind that this was a Sunday trip so it certainly isn't typical to be able to break 40ish mph during the week (and often on the weekends).

Last is one of the few N bound pictures that made it through.

This pic isn't all that great, but I did like the "big sky" effect produced by the iPhone. And we finally had some high clouds in So Cal, which is another rarity around here.

Time on the Fwy

So I did manage to make it out for a short journey on the 405 this week. Unfortunately it really was a short trip, and opportunities for photos were pretty slim. Here's a decent shot - what's great here is that the traffic is actually moving.

I had intended to take a few more shots on the way back into town. However I was thwarted by another freeway - one that is the antithesis of the greatness of the 405 - the 10.

Coming through Santa Monica - where the 10 begins - I ended up in bumper to bumper traffic - at 3 pm no less - and was forced to get off the freeway and take side streets the rest of the way back.

I suppose in theory this could have been caused by the never-ending construction on the 405 at the junction with the 10, but then I can't blame the 10. And I really dislike the 10.

I'll be heading South on the 405 this weekend. This time I will be traveling a bit of distance so should have some nice shots to post on Monday.

Site Link

Here's a link to a pretty good site that shows the various exits etc. on the 405. What I find most fascinating about it that there is almost no traffic in any of the photos.

I'll also put it in the links section.

I'm taking a trek today up the 405N; I'll shoot some iPhone photos and post them on Thurs/Fri so stay tuned.

The Greatest Freeway

Well, for now it's still free -- except for the $4 a gallon gasoline.

What will follow will be significant, important and completely trivial shots of a freeway that has consumed much of my adult life. Depending on job changes in the near future, there may be very few, or very many shots of this great freeway to come.

In the meantime, here is a shot I stole from the interwebs.
